Greetings from Wando

So, here I am in Wando - visiting Nicola.

Yesterday, there was a Chiang Po Go festival (This guy who got rid of Chinese pirates or something) and it was great. Lots of people, a parade, a huge ceremony and a 45-minute long military gun juggling thingy. There are less waguk here, so we were stared at a lot more than I usually am in Suncheon.

I bought a pair of black military pants from a market stall ($10), and they fit perfectly. The high-waist, tapered leg, big pockets on the thighs might not be the most flattering look but ... hey. I've also embraced socks and sandals as a good thing.

Today, we woke up to RAIN. After 87 cups of tea, we decided to go out for a hike. As we climbed the cliffs overlooking the sea, I really had a sense of being "in Korea". We even found old cement pillbox hideout things from the war. Absolutely gorgeous.

Will write more when I get to Suncheon, I must finish drinking my hot can of coffee (yes, you can buy hot cans of coffee here. I love this place.)

Also batiks too. You would love the Oriental quilts. Glad you got to visit away from a big city & attend a festival & sit by the sea. Love ya MOM

  • Wow, sounds like such an amazing place, and you make me really think about going to oz! I think I’m going to do it, I just need to find a job first and a place to stay. I think that would help ;-)

I will have to make a pit stop to visit you on the way over to oz. How was the flight? I’m not big on flying over the ocean.

  • Yeah - pants that fit! The fact that they are men's military pants is beside the point, right?

Jewelry is nice. I am still wearing an enamel coated silver pendant that I bought my 2nd day here in Gwangju. Nicest thing I've seen at all.

    Tell Jack to e-mail me.

Mom - no real fabric stores here. I'll see what I can find you elsewhere.

Yes - get a blog, Al. Did you get the video of me walking through my apt? Did it work?

14 hour flight, but you sleep the whole time!

  • What are the cement pillbox things? Are they bomb shelters? places to shoot people from?

How are you getting around? lots of walking or taxis? or kind gentlemen carrying you around?

  • Well the Virgin missed the most amazing Korean dancing men and girls dressed like snow white! Gotta love the swirling hats and big skirts...

Wando mourned your departure with blue skys and more kimchi festivities; but it wasn't the same without you:(

i've now got a cough and a laminating fixation.....this is worrying:)

Remember to SPPEAAAKKK SLLLOWWLYY to foreign folks:)(and maybe on my advice to get a face mask)

  • Shoot people, I guess. They were in disrepair, but some had been rebuilt. Still, it was quite surreal.

Please get better Nicola! Sorry to have missed the dancing whatever on Sunday. However, it was worth coming home a bit early to be able to go to Emart with Karen and buy Nature's Path cereal! Lots of organic stuff, but bring lots of Won.
