Arang - Korean horror movie

I just spent the afternoon watching "Arang", a Korean horror movie with 200 screaming Korean teenagers.... if you thought that random loud noises, bumble bees and thunder could make them scream, just try being in a movie theatre! My ears are still ringing.

And, yes, it was in Korean. But I got the idea, especially since I had a bright student next to me. Right: Girl's boyfriend dies saving her from attackers, she dies, she comes back and enacts revenge on attackers one by one, accompanied by her unborn baby... but sends them an e-mail first to warn them. Then, the story kind of degenerated into the sort of thing you would expect from a Korean music video: unrequited love, tragic stares over the ocean, tears, shootings etc.

In other news, we had a lively debate in the office today between two Canadians (me and Lucan), the Chinese guy (Zhao Lei) and my Korean head teacher (Sung Myeong) over whether or not North Korea will cause a war with the US because of sending missiles into the Sea of Japan, how South Korea will react, how Japan will react, and if China would take North or South Korea's side. Whew. It was pretty interesting and, word on the street is that most South Koreans do not feel any immediate threat and are all pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

Strategically, since Jeollanamdo is pretty much the middle of nowhere, I don't think we have much to worry about.

  • The fact that North Korea chose to test their weapons despite much reprehension and warnings is nerve wracking. They were aiming and practising to send a nuclear war head to the United States of America, and they got away with it?? Is that not grounds in the Bush administration for some kind of action?? Let alone the United Nations? This is 2006, how is this kind of neanderthal behavior acceptable?? We live beside the most brain washed messed up country on earth. Thank God they failed ...The psychotic fools.

  • Ya - I totally agree.... but none of the South Koreans seem to be panicking. They are all just shopping and getting makeovers like usual.

It's like someone forgot to tell the North Koreans that the sabre-rattling Cold War era was over. And...who were they targetting? Japan?

  • All I can think is: sure, it was a "test".

  • Yeah, here is Mokpo, No one here has even mentioned it.

I guess they all realize that North Korea wouldn't actually fire at anyone... it's much more effective to just point your gun at someone rather than actually shoot them. And, might as well show them you have bullets while you are there.

It's just their way of getting more economic concessions from the US or to make a buck producing Nukes for terrorists. Fun fun! Hooray for rogue nations!

  • ELLIE! Oh my god!

I'm not afraid of North Korea. I am more worried about the US... they've been looking for a new enemy since their invasion of Iraq just ain't so popular anymore. And, is there any country more evil than North Korea?
